Getting A New Puppy? Care They Need To Keep Them Healthy

Blog

If you are getting a new puppy for you and your family, there are many things you need to do to ensure it grows up healthy. Keep reading to learn more so you and your puppy can enjoy spending your time together.

Vaccinations

One of the most important things you should do for your puppy is getting them vaccinated. Take them to a veterinarian and they will set them up on a vaccination schedule. These vaccinations are given to them throughout their first year. There are also some that should be done yearly.

Common vaccines that a dog needs are to prevent distemper, rabies, hepatitis, and parvovirus. In many states, it is the law for your dog to get a rabies vaccination regularly. If you do not and your dog gets rabies and bites someone, you will be liable for their medical care.

For a puppy, they will get vaccinations every few weeks for their first year. After this, the veterinarian can tell you the types of vaccinations your dog needs and how often they will need them when they become older.

Vet Checkup

Take your puppy to the veterinarian in the beginning for their first checkup. The vet will check your puppy from head to toe to ensure they are healthy. Finding health problems early will increase the chances of your dog staying healthy because treatment can be started earlier.

The vet will check your dog's temperature, which is generally done anally. They will inspect their ears, teeth, gums, and coat. The vet will inspect their skin for any conditions. The vet feels around different areas of their body to see if the puppy feels any pain while doing so. If your puppy needs any medications, the vet will prescribe them and tell you how often your puppy should take them.

The vet will be knowledgeable about the breed you purchase. The vet will know the best type of food to feed your puppy and the type to give them when they get older. The vet will tell you how much to feed your puppy and how often. Treats should also be given, and the vet can give you suggestions on the types of treats that work well.

Besides these tips, you should also take your puppy to a dog trainer as soon as they are old enough. This will help your dog learn how to be social around other dogs and people, as well as learn different tricks.

Trap-Alter-Release: Program Launch Fundamentals

When I moved into the town I'm living in now, there was a large population of stray cats. Unfortunately, that population kept growing in rapid numbers because none of the cats had been fixed. I knew that wasn't a healthy situation, so I reached out to a local shelter and a veterinarian to launch a trap-alter-release program. Within about a year, we had the entire population altered and released back to their environments. The logistics were significant, but not overwhelming. That's why I built this site. My goal is to teach others how to launch a similar program in their own neighborhood to help keep the stray cats healthier and safer.
